Community Information
Cumberland, Maine Real Estate
Cumberland, Maine. Just north of Portland on Casco Bay, Cumberland blends coastal living with wide open farmland and wooded trails. It's a town of three distinct areas: Cumberland Foreside, with its shoreline estates along Route 88; Cumberland Center, the town's walkable heart with the library, schools and town offices; and West Cumberland, where homes sit on larger lots surrounded by fields and forest.
Families come for the schools, and they stay for the sense of community. From the Cumberland Fair each September to summer concerts on the Greely lawn, this is a place where neighbors know each other.
And with downtown Portland about 15 minutes away, Cumberland offers a quieter pace without giving up city convenience.
Living in Cumberland
Cumberland is home to about 8,500 residents and was incorporated in 1821, when it separated from North Yarmouth. Chebeague Island was part of Cumberland until 2007, when it became its own town, but Cumberland still holds a stretch of Casco Bay shoreline along the Foreside.
The real estate here is varied. Along the Foreside you'll find waterfront and water-view homes, many with deep lots and private docks. Cumberland Center offers established neighborhoods close to schools and the town green, while West Cumberland has newer subdivisions, farmhouses and homes with acreage.
Outdoor space is a big part of life in Cumberland. The town maintains Twin Brook Recreation Area, Broad Cove Reserve with its public waterfront access, Knight's Pond Preserve, Rines Forest and the Town Forest, plus Val Halla, the town-owned golf course.

The Cumberland Fair, held at the end of September since 1868, is one of Maine's largest agricultural fairs, with livestock shows, harness racing, food and rides. Year-round, you can walk the shoreline at Broad Cove Reserve, pick apples at Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards, pick up fresh produce at Spring Brook Farm, or play a round at Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center.
Some of my favorite local places include;
Dara Bistro. A cozy café and bistro on Tuttle Road, a favorite local stop for coffee, breakfast and lunch near Cumberland Center.
Cumberland House of Pizza. A longtime local favorite on Route 100 for pizza, subs and takeout after a game or a long day.
Wander at LongWoods. A farm-to-table restaurant off Route 9 near Cumberland Center, set on the LongWoods Preserve with walking trails and its own farm supplying the kitchen. Known for its seasonal menu, Maine beers and cocktails, and wood-fired pizza on the outdoor patio.
